Methodological guide ⎯ Concerted development of social cohesion indicators

This guide proposes a method and tools for making the co-responsibility of public and private actors work, at the local, regional, national and European levels, for the welfare of all without exclusion. It provides actors in the same geographical territory with the means to pool their ideas, choose their objectives and translate them into indicators in order to clarify and quantify them, monitor the progress made and assess their impact. Based on a global approach to social cohesion that looks not only at welfare in its various dimensions as an outcome, but also at how people interact to achieve this welfare and the values, feelings and bonds they share, the guide proposes a variable-geometry framework for analysing social cohesion in different areas of life and vulnerable groups.

Measuring the success of cultural diversity projects

Culture takes diverse forms across time and space. This diversity is embodiedin the uniqueness and plurality of the identities of the groups and societies making up humankind. As a source of
exchange, innovation and creativity, cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature. In this sense, it is the common heritage of humanity and should be recognised and affirmed for the benefit of present and future generations.

Charting the landscape of European youth voluntary activities

The research papers included in this collection, first presented at a seminar in Budapest in July 2004 entitled “How does the voluntary engagement of young people enhance their active citizenship and solidarity?” provides initial answers to these questions and more. As part of the framework of the partnership agreement on youth research between the Council of Europe and the European Commission, the research seminar and this publication provide a starting point for developing future strategies for the implementation of policy on young people’s voluntary activities. This collection is intended not only for researchers and policy makers, but also for practitioners involved with facilitating voluntary activities for young people and those with a general interest in non-formal learning.
