This essay by Susana Lafraya is a contribution to enlarging the circle of communication on intercultural learning experience through youth work. It is translated and published here with the intention of adding one more stone to the edifice of intercultural learning and non-formal education.
The content of this handbook is based on the proposals for educational activities that were developed by the teachers and trainers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine who took part in the project. The activities presented here cover a range topics associated with intercultural education that correspond to some of the key elements and competences that the Council of Europe considers to be fundamental for intercultural education.

This publication looks at the development of intercultural competence as a key element of mainstream education. It stresses the need fisrtly for an appropiate education policy which puts intercultural competence at the heart of all education and, above all, for the developement, on an everyday basis, of the necessary attitudes, skills and knowledge needed for mutual understanding. Whithout these, no sustainable societal change is possible.

Intercultural and Interreligious dialogue in youth work practice was held in Istanbul from 27 to 31 march 2007. It focused on the problems young people accross Europe face in relation to cultural and religious diversity. The participants exchanged good practice in youth work and agreed on a Declaration that sets out the main purpose and objectives in intercultural interreligious from a youth perspective.
